Ha!! True, I agree with that statement of hers too!! But at the same time America is a superpower, and you can’t deny it’s influence on, and indirect psychological conquest of, the rest of the world!! People around the globe, quite gladly like to be conquered by the west, for various reasons. Love it or Hate it, USA is country that practically everyone know exists (Quite a lot of people don’t even know Sri Lanka; can’t blame then, it’s not like all Lankan’s know every single country in the world; but SL not being acquainted to the whole world, really hurts extremist Lankan ego’s). When Barack Obama won the American elections, it was about time USA had at least a half-black President. Thus the world cheered. It was more about non-Caucasian getting equal rights (Racial Equality)!! When USA made it legal for Gay weddings nation wide (even though the States wasn’t the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage); USA being a world superpower, a massive country, none the less, making it legal for the entire nation, for sexual equality, was again a big win for the entire world. But of course, speaking of having a woman leader, lot of the world has already achieved it, centuries ago, from Queens and Empresses, to Female Presidents & Prime Ministers in the last century. So it’s nothing new, for Mother Earth, but definitely should be a big win, for the United States!!! But a greater, though controversial, issue, would be if an openly gay/lesbian, or transgender premier were to be elected!!!
Anyway, my votes are for Hillary Clinton (not literally of course, unfortunately).
I absolutely love Arundhati Roy’s writing, although the only book of hers that I’ve read is The God of Small Things. Her writing was so vivid, I can still remember characters and some of her beautiful passages.
I know, she is superb writer. I read The God of Small Things 16 years ago, and fell in love with her unique style, then and there. Pity, that’s the only novel she’s written. I haven’t read her non-fiction books either, but have come across a few of her interesting articles in magazines/newspapers!!!
Plus, I’ve seen a very young Arundhati Roy in Massey Sahib (1985). She had a very small role in it!!! Of course I watched it as a kid, and didn’t know who she was, until the late 1990’s!!!
“I kind of resent the idea that the whole world has to be interested in the American elections.”
